Lot 793
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Mid 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Gold, 20 mm, 6.19 g, 5 h), imitating Caracalla, 198-217, and Julia Domna, 193-217. NTTXXAA[...]ΛΛAAN[.]N (starting at 2 o'clock) Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla to right, seen from rear. Rev. ΠΠΠ◠◠HΛNPΠZZΓΓΓΓ[.]NΛΛ[.]HIIM (starting at 12 o'clock) Juno standing front, head to left with long hair falling down her back, holding patera (?) in her right hand and inverted spear in her left; at feet to left, peacock standing left, looking up. Cf. Calicó 2617-2618 (for prototype of Julia Domna). Holed and with numerous scratches and the flan somewhat wavy, otherwise, very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

The obverse of this piece loosely copies an aureus of Caracalla, but the reverse, with its charming adaptation of a long-haired Juno holding a spear instead of a scepter, was taken from an issue of Julia Domna.
